Pocahontas

Duluth Festival Opera has received funding from the new Legacy Arts and Cultural Fund’s “Arts Tour Minnesota Grant” to produce and tour the Midwestern premier of a new opera by award-winning Minnesota composer Linda Tutas Haugen, entitled Pocahontas. The opera will be premiered in Duluth on September 22, 2011 at Marshall School’s Fregeau Auditorium and performed in Grand Rapids and Burnsville on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, 2011.

The opera was commissioned in 2007 by the Virginia Arts Festival for the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, Virginia and tells the tragic story of the famed Native American icon, Pocahontas, who lived in the early 1600’s. The story addresses deeply rooted cultural biases and misunderstandings about those Native peoples and their clashes with the invading Europeans. It adheres to the historical record from that time period and de-bunk the myths and legendary half-truths that surround the name of Pocahontas. In order to better understand the Native American experience, the opera incorporates traditional Native American literature, music and dance with inspiring performances by local tribal artists.
