About the composer

Linda Tutas Haugen earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from St. Olaf College, and a Master of Arts degree in Music Composition and Theory from the University of Minnesota where she studied with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, Dominick Argento. Haugen has written for a variety of vocal and instrumental genres, including chamber music, full and chamber orchestra, solo voice, choral, and opera. Her music has received critical acclaim as “music of character and genuine beauty.” [Minneapolis StarTribune.] Opera Today praised Haugen’s opera, Pocahontas, as “superbly crafted,” “engaging,” and “beautiful and often powerful.”

Haugen has received numerous grants and awards, including a fellowship from the Minnesota State Arts Board in 1997, residencies from the Jerome Foundation and American Composers Forum in 1997-1998 (Rural Residencies), in 1999-2000 (Continental Harmony Residency: Music for the Millennium), and 2004-2006 (Faith Partners Residency). From 1999-2002, as one of only four awarded nationally, she received a three-year residency fellowship from Meet The Composer under its New Residencies program, working in Grand Forks, ND, using the creation of new music to help the arts community rebuild itself after the devastating flood of 1997.

Prominent commissions include a 25th Anniversary work for the San Francisco Girls Chorus based on texts from the Diary of Anne Frank, which was recorded in studio and released in 2007, an orchestral work for the National Kidney Foundation in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of organ transplantation, a National Endowment for the Arts funded grant to compose a work for the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies which premiered in 2006 at the Music Educators National Conference in Utah, and a work for organ and trumpet commissioned by the American Guild of Organists for its 2008 National Convention. Pocahontas was commissioned by the Virginia Arts Festival and Virginia Opera to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, which premiered at the 2007 Virginia Arts Festival in Norfolk, VA.  Recent highlights include a work for treble choir, viola, and bells, commissioned by the Badger State Girl Choir for an audience with Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican and tour of Italy, a performance of Anne Frank: A Living Voice at the 2011 National Collegiate Choral Organization Conference in Colorado, choral works featured at the 2010 Western and 2011 National ACDA Conventions, and commissions from Two Rivers Chorale, ACDA Minnesota, and Partners In Praise Girl’s Chorus.

Haugen has extensive experience as a composer-in-residence and teacher, and is committed to working with performers, schools, and young composers to help them understand the creative process and the importance that new music can have in their lives. She is on the faculty of the National Federation of Music Club’s Junior Composers Institute. She has appeared as guest lecturer at colleges and universities, and has conducted workshops on the elementary through high school levels.

Haugen’s music is lyrical and emotionally accessible to performers and audiences. She is inspired by a variety of historical, literary and ethnic sources, and has utilized non- traditional instrumentation such as Native American flutes, ethnic percussion, and folk instruments in her compositions. Her works have been performed by a variety of professional and college ensembles, including Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, North Carolina Symphony, Virginia Opera, members of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, St. Olaf College Orchestra, Northwestern College Choir, Magnum Chorum, Chiara String Quartet, and Triad Clarinet Trio.
